User 1: I give this projector a four star rating. I am pleased based on the results I have got so far after tweaking (This is NOT my first projector. I upgraded from a Mitsubishi HD1000u). Here are my observations…
I have had a very pleasing movie experience thanks to it’s high resolution which is quite close to what you get in a 2k digital cinema (I have a 145″ diagonal screen and view from about fifteen feet). If you want to really take advantage of this projector’s resolution, get a well-mastered blu-ray disc.
You don’t get jet blacks with this projector like you’d get from either a DLP or LCD projector. However, that doesn’t bother me since real cinema movies don’t even have jet blacks for blank screens. In my opinion, this projector provides something closer to the reality you’d get from cinema.
I really doubt if you can find a better projector within this price range with respect to the quality of image delivered. I recommend it.

User 2: I give this one a five star rating. If you want to enjoy a 1080p projector without having to take out a second mortgage, this one will fill your need. However, as with everything in life, you need to ensure that it is exactly what you want. Here are points you can pick from my experience with it (First, the pros)…

It is visually appealing. Is NOT noisy when you use it in the normal-bulb mode. You get a lot of lamp life from it (about 4000 hours). You can use it even with lights turned on — In the bright mode. Because it is 1080p, you get superior image details. Just watch a good blu-ray disc with it and you’d appreciate how awesome it is. You’d also love your video games more if you use this — It gives you an unfair advantage over your opponents who are just using normal HDTV especially if you are using a very large screen.
You get a lot of options for tweaking. However, I personally prefer the Cinema mode. It comes with a calibration disc so you can adjust settings to your personal taste. Automatic shut-off feature is a very good thing especially if you don’t use it alone or want to avoid leaving it turned on after it’s been used for whatever reason.
Now to the negatives of the Optoma Hd20…
The blacks are NOT as good as you’d get from a good HDTV. It didn’t ruin the viewing experience for me but I just chose to point it out in case this is a real big issue for you. Furthermore, I discovered that you’d get better blacks from this projector after the bulb has gone for more than 200 hours.
If you attempt to tweak things beyond a point, you could actually mess things up leaving you with either washed out whites, for example. My experience is that I was pretty better off with out-of-the-box settings but that might be expected as I am NOT good in this calibrating stuff.
Another issue I have is that it doesn’t come with an auto-focus feature. For folks who have theirs in a fixed position, this shouldn’t be a concern but if you move it around then you’d find that this would have been a very handy feature.
But with all I have said, I still give this projector a five star rating for the simple reasons that it really overdelivers for a product within its price range. Do a research and see by how much projectors with similar features and performance are more expensive. If you get this projector and have a good screen, you won’t go to a movie again because you won’t need to.
